From Supply Chain Disruptions to Decarbonization: How Natural Biopolymers Could Reshape Petrochemical Dependency

Written by Will Jones

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has made significant investments in boosting hydrocarbon production capacity and constructing midstream and downstream infrastructure to support potential expansion in hydrocarbon output. According to Country Analysis Brief: United Arab Emirates, UAE real output has averaged just under 3 million barrels per day (b/d) during the last decade as a result of production reduction agreements between OPEC and non-OPEC participating nations (collectively known as OPEC+).

At the same time, the broader global context surrounding energy is becoming increasingly complex. Governments and industries are under growing pressure to align with decarbonization goals, even as global supply chains face mounting strain from geopolitical tensions, shifting trade dynamics, and continued dependence on petrochemical inputs.

François Lamoureux explains that this tension between energy security and climate responsibility is now shaping decision-making at both regional and global levels, particularly in markets like the UAE, where production scale and sustainability ambitions must coexist.

One such solution is the technology spearheaded by Lamoureux, CEO of CXC-SKIN, a part of the Montréal-based company CXC™, focused on transforming natural biopolymers into viable resources for industries traditionally reliant on petrochemicals. “Our team at CXC realized that we had stumbled across a technology that, when developed, could really affect change towards decarbonization of whole industries. We started with Beauty & Personal Care. But the possibilities go way beyond this $600 billion industry.”

While not every sector can easily transition away from fossil-based inputs, Lamoureux notes that certain industries, particularly personal care and cosmetics, present a viable pathway to reduce reliance on petrochemicals at scale. “The convergence of supply chain instability and climate ambition is reshaping the conditions under which alternative materials are no longer optional but increasingly necessary, with the added benefit of enhanced performance in areas such as anti-aging,” he says.

This perspective reflects a broader shift in how materials are evaluated. What was once considered a niche sustainability initiative is increasingly viewed through the lens of supply chain resilience and long-term industrial strategy.

Starting with COP28, hosted in the UAE, Gulf leaders reinforced their commitment to advancing decarbonization while maintaining economic resilience, highlighting the need for practical, scalable solutions that can be implemented across industries. This dual mandate, to sustain output while reducing emissions, underscores the importance of innovation within downstream sectors.

“Within this environment, production decisions are no longer isolated economic choices,” Lamoureux says. “They are increasingly shaped by geopolitical coordination, market stability concerns, and the longer-term trajectory of the energy transition.”

The UAE has consistently demonstrated its willingness to leverage its excess production capabilities, sometimes diverging from the more conservative approach advocated by other OPEC members. According to the International Trade Administration, the UAE is actively exploring unconventional oil and gas resources, testing and implementing new extraction technologies to increase recovery rates and prolong output, creating opportunities for greenfield projects.

Yet, as capital continues to flow into energy infrastructure, there is a parallel opportunity to rethink how downstream value chains are structured. With a projected $2 trillion investment gap in minerals crucial for climate change mitigation, the broader transition will depend not only on new energy sources or on how existing industries reduce their carbon intensity, but it will also depend on novel repurposing of materials like natural biopolymers.

“It really comes down to all of this being a balancing act: maintaining market stability and responding to environmental demands. In this context, the UAE’s position is shaped not only by capacity expansion but also by its role within a wider geopolitical framework that is actively influencing long-term energy strategy,” Lamoureux says.

According to Lamoureux, in a global context where supply chain disruptions can ripple across markets, the ability to localize or diversify raw material inputs becomes increasingly valuable. Natural biopolymers, he explains, offer a pathway to reduce reliance on tightly coupled petrochemical supply chains, which are often concentrated in specific regions and vulnerable to geopolitical disruption. In comparison, for instance, Chitin and Chitosan are derived from mushrooms, which, being renewable and plentiful, offer a more locally manageable supply chain.

He also emphasizes that adoption ultimately depends on performance. “History has shown that consumers are at the heart of any successful transition. Without great products, adoption of new technology simply does not occur. At CXC-SKIN, we have demonstrated that beauty and personal care products can be formulated using our technology, placing natural biopolymers such as chitosan at the core of high-performing skincare solutions.”

What sets this company apart is its focus on both environmental sustainability and economic viability. By providing alternatives to petrochemical-derived ingredients, CXC-SKIN enables companies to meet evolving regulatory expectations while maintaining performance standards.

More importantly, this approach reflects a broader strategic shift. In a world where supply chains are increasingly fragmented and climate targets are becoming more defined, solutions that address both challenges simultaneously are likely to gain traction. “The ability to reduce dependency on fossil-based inputs while maintaining industrial performance positions natural biopolymers as more than a niche innovation,” Lamoureux says. “They represent a practical pathway toward resilience.”

Recovery And Quality Of Life: The Driving Forces Behind Pink Lotus Elements

For countless women facing the mental, emotional and physical challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis, living a normal life can seem like an impossible task.

And once she has time to absorb this first blow — that her body has been under attack — she is forced to confront yet another wave of challenges. These challenges include the myriad of considerations and overwhelming choices a breast cancer patient must face as she works her way through treatment and towards recovery.

Navigating a diagnosis and the turmoil that it can generate, is not easy. However, having to devote extensive time and energy to research, select and try products that might provide some relief is a complicated endeavor that many women simply don´t have the energy to undertake in times of personal crisis – companies like Pink Lotus are helping patients unburden themselves.

Originally founded in 2007 with a sole focus on diagnosis and treatment of breast disease, the Pink Lotus brand has evolved much over the years and now spans across several businesses that have proven to be crucial guides for millions of women.

One of them, the Pink Lotus Elements store, improves the lives of women affected by breast cancer in over 30 countries by offering an assortment of highly unique, functional and clinically-backed products that can significantly enhance recovery and invigorate the lifestyle that follows thereafter.

Pink Lotus Elements focuses on this intersection between diagnosis and recovery and has excelled and earned a reputation for offering real and actionable product solutions to women of all backgrounds instead of the pink gimmicks that have long dominated breast cancer awareness campaigns all over the world – most of which have no real bearing on the improvement of a woman’s health.

An Exclusive Look Inside Look At Skinsation On Wilshire

Jenny Ghazaryan and her business partner Naira Cole have always been passionate about beauty, skincare and wellness.

As the industry continues to grow, elevating service standards and delivering an unparalleled selection of bespoke treatments has become the premise behind Skinsation on Wilshire, the new wellness hotspot that has captured the attention of numerous movers and shakers of the Los Angeles social scene.

We spoke to Ms. Ghazaryan and discovered what makes her establishment the new gold-standard in self-care.

Have you always been attracted to the wellness and beauty industry?

The wellness and beauty industry has seen explosive growth in the past couple of years. I believe that it is leaning towards more natural looks, something I have always been an advocate for. I have always dreamt of creating a one stop medical spa where all our clients’ beauty needs can be addressed.

What are some of the treatments that make Skinsation on Wilshire unique?

We offer laser treatments such as body and face contouring, skin resurfacing and tightening, injectables, IV therapy, facials, and cosmetic dentistry. Our approach to beauty is a little different, as we look at the body as a whole. We offer packages that will address multiple skin or body enhancements. During consultation clients will receive a combination package, rather than an individual treatment.

How did you pick the location for your business?

The medical spa industry is pretty saturated. Picking the right location was one of the challenges we faced throughout the process. When conducting analysis, we took in consideration multiple factors such as demographics, accessibility and parking, competition, etc. Another factor that influenced our decision is partnering up with Wilshire Dental Group for cosmetic dentistry.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your background?

I grew up in Armenia and moved to the United States six years ago to pursue education in Public Health. My goal was to gain knowledge and experience in the field to be able to travel and share my expertise in the countries that need improvement in health education and healthcare in general. After graduating, I worked as a health and wellness consultant, as well as managed a medical clinic. I have been actively involved in health and wellness advocacy among underserved population and hope to be able to pursue my dream.

Do you have any advice for other young women who wish to become entrepreneurs and business owners like yourself?

It may sound cliché, but if I, an immigrant who moved to this country and started all over again, did it in 6 years, you also can. Find something that you really are passionate about and put all your focus on it, and I promise the rest will be history.

The Real Connection Between Beauty And Humanitarian Leadership

Medspas are not usually associated with humanitarian efforts, however when it comes to pre-eminent social leadership, one spot in particular has gained global recognition. We´re talking about Harmony Aesthetics Center, a cutting edge practice located in Santa Monica, California.

Irene Noren And The Pursuit Of Collective Empowerment

Growing up in a small town in Spain, Irene had a clear objective: to discover how far her talent, entrepreneurial spirit and natural beauty could take her and what exactly she could do to inspire and empower others around her.

Now based in Paris, the successful actress, model, fashion influencer and accomplished entrepreneur has taken her philosophy to the next level by consolidating her image as a centerfold for global brands such as YSL, Puma, Fenty Beauty, Revolve and Nastygal to name a few.

Irene got her start being cast in a film when she was only 8 years old and has never looked back – since then she has gone on to collaborate with international stars like Antonio Banderas with whom she shot a television commercial, and has also gone deep into entrepreneurship.

Some of Irene´s projects include her own sustainable fashion label and clothing brand adequately named IN by Irene, she is also working on inspiring books and has organized meet-ups in Los Angeles designed to empower and bring together young, successful women just like her.

Irene has big plans for 2020, and she is focused on achieving her goals – which she is certain will help blaze new trails for aspiring young artists and entrepreneurs around the world, as her biggest desire is to help others succeed and accomplish their dreams.

What is your biggest goal for 2020?

As an ambitious person my goals are always improving and keep learning, but there are some projects that I want to finish next year. Launching my clothing brand IN by Irene is probably the most exciting one but also I’m going to self publish my first book where I talk about my values and life philosophy and I’m also working on developing an app for my non profit company that basically will help women around the world to feel comfortable and empowered.

Name 3 people that inspire you and why.

Growing up my grandmother will always be a huge inspiration to me, not only because of her manners but also for the way she sees the world, in a very pure and healthy way.

Emily Ratajkowski is a huge inspiration too, not only because she motivates me to physically have a body like her but also because the way she respects herself and the way she moved from model to entrepreneur is very inspiring. I love how she empowers women and how confident she is. Last I will say myself, I came a long way, fighting, falling and I have always picked myself up. I have suffered a lot growing up, I had family problems, relationship problems, I have been judged many times but no matter how bad the situation is I always find a way to keep going and move on and more important never hurting anyone in the process.

Share with us at least one major challenge you’ve had to overcome.

Growing up in a very small town opportunities where very scarce, so for me the fact of working hard to be able to move to a bigger city, and build my confidence from zero (after a break up that took me years to overcome) move to Los Angeles with no friends, build my career and being able to recognize my path and mission through years of self studying about philosophy and spirituality until the point I get to inspire and help people to be confident to follow their dreams, it’s for sure one of the major challenges I had overcome.

With new trends shaking the fashion world and natural beauty making a big comeback, we decided to get to know one of the breakout models of 2019 who is sure to have an even bigger year ahead.

What inspired you to start modeling?

I could say the main reason was traveling, not every girl gets a chance to travel around the world in such young age . I Started modeling when I was 15 and for me traveling to different countries such as Japan was something incredible and unbelievable.

How did you get your start?

My mom persuaded me to go to a modeling school in my home town (I did not want to be a model in the first place) I actually couldn’t believe that I can ever be a model, and after few month, there was a casting for my agency and I made it, everything went so fast that in 6 months I flew for my first contract to Japan.

Who are your role models in the industry?

My main role model in any industry is my mom, She is very genuine, principled, kind, smart and strong woman and that is what I want and I´m trying to be.

What has your favorite modeling job been and why?

I love shooting editorials, it is always an art, we have so much freedom for Fantasy to create something unique. One of my favorites was for «Marie Claire» magazine in Thailand, we were shooting a «Chanel» story in an old beautiful castle.

Where can we find you? (Billboards, storefronts, any current campaigns, etc.?)

Right now you can find me mostly in Mexico I spent there a lot of time this year while renewing my USA visa, the most recent campaign came out for «Skechers» Mexico and Cover story for «Grazia» Mexico. Here in LA campaign for «Tilly’s» is coming soon too.

Where have you traveled for work? Anywhere in particular that stands out?

I have traveled a lot around Asia and Europe for work until I came to New York (that was love at first sight) and then LA of course. Now I’m settled in the west coast

Describe your career goals.

In the short term I want to go work in a few countries that I never been before (England, Australia) and work with local brands over there.

With two contrasting looks created for each designer, the first show to feature INIKA Organic was Jonathan Cohen. With a legacy of creating pieces inspired by Mexico, a hint of modern Manhattan and a laid back attitude of California, Jonathan Cohen’s SS2020 show was all about bright patterns and bright makeup to match. With lead makeup artist Yuki Hayashi at the helm, INIKA Organic brought Jonathan’s vision to life with all NEW limited-edition colors curated especially for his runway.

The Jonathan Cohen SS2020 Runway Look:

This show was big, bright and bold. Bright pops of INIKA's 100% natural eye colors stole the limelight and were teamed with INIKA's timeless bases, brows, lashes and lips to bring the look together.

The second show saw INIKA Organic create a contemporary take on a 60's natural chic look for womenswear designer, Chocheng. Chocheng's SS2020 draws inspiration from 1960 mystery thrillers Plein Soleil and Midnight Lace. It takes retro wardrobe references and reimagines them for the modern woman. Neutrals, tones of pink, candy stripes, monochrome and coral red worn with wood framed sunglasses, straw bags and platform espadrilles bring a fresh summer femininity to the season. Lead MUA Campbell Ritchie brought Chocheng's makeup vision to life by using the most natural and elegant shades of pink in the INIKA Organic collection, inspired by Jackie O holidaying in Saint-Tropez.

At NYFW, INIKA Organic made a powerful and long lasting statement of superior quality product performance, seamlessly coupled with high sustainability standards – having a profound impact during the Jonathan Cohen and Chocheng shows and supported by a select group of influential thought leaders in the fashion and beauty world such as Natalie Off Duty, Charlotte Bridgeman, Lorena Haliti, and Lisa Cahue.

Getting To Know The Minds Behind Just Human

What does being “Just Human” mean to you?

It means we’re all imperfect and at the same time, we can choose to be a force for good. The pressures of trying to be perfect can easily deter us from doing anything at all. We hope that by celebrating imperfection we can help others realize that what makes them imperfect is the same thing that makes them unique and special.

As a catalyst for change in the fashion industry, how do your products inspire humans to “do more good” than ever before?

We put a lot of thought and creativity into all aspects of our product with the intention that it would inspire humans to be more conscious and thoughtful about the products we consume and “do more good”. When we decided to develop a sustainable product we took a look at the entire system from design to materials to manufacturing and packaging. We believe the idea of “do more good” is about always striving for better and not settling.

Just Human glasses are engineered to be unisex and universal. What was your inspiration behind this unanimous product approach?

We wanted to take a different approach and design a unisex collection that empowers humans to express themselves and not be limited by societal norms. We also believe designing for gender creates a lot of wasteful SKUs so we decided to explore designing a unisex collection with a few designs as possible.

The company is founded on a principle of sustainability. How did you integrate sustainability and fashion?

We saw a gap in the market for a sunglass brand that looked fashionable and was made sustainably. Our goal was to bring sustainability mainstream and to show that you don’t have to compromise style and comfort. We sourced natural materials that felt chic and luxurious and designed to last. Our frame material is made from reforested softwood trees, our high-performance glass lenses are made from sand and minerals which are much more durable and scratch-resistant than plastic lenses. Our sunglass case is made from pineapple leaf fibers and our cleaning cloth from recycled water bottles.

What’s next for Just Human?

Our immediate focus is on spreading the word about the brand and continuing to build out IRL experiences. We’ve recently launched showrooms in Naked Retail – 224 Mulberry St, Nolita, NYC, Atelier & Repairs – 710 N Edinburgh Ave, LA, CA and Leone Napoli 686 St. Clair Ave. West, Toronto, ON. Stay tuned for our SF showroom.

Crystal Infused Skincare Is Beauty´S Best Kept Secret

In cosmetics, one of the most talked-about brands to emerge in years is Crystal Clay™ wunderkind Klast Beauty.

Given the rising popularity of crystals within the beauty, makeup and skincare ecosystem, visionary founder Jenn Kain was inspired to see if she could create a superior skincare solution in the space that would perform better, and provide the added value of indulging in precious stone luxury.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Kain sought out the crystals from the finest ethical single-source clay mine in the country, which she discovered after an extensive search process with the help of co-founder Zach Iser.

From this pristine red-utisol clay, Kain developed unique formulas, including a Crystal Clay™Mask, as well as a Crystal Pearl Mist that balances PH, vitalizes complexion, and refreshes the skin on a deep level, leaving a healthy, natural glow.

Klast’s rise to the top as the first crystal-origin skincare solution has been met with rave reception from supermodels and fashion icons, such as models Lyena Strama and Rose Bertram.

Bertram's inspiring testimonial—reprinted below—set off a firestorm of excitement over the brand that’s piqued the interest in the potential of crystal-healing power from the cosmetics industry at large.

“MY SKIN is so important to me! I'm always looking for new products, new masks, creams, etc. I never go to bed without cleaning my face and making sure it is well hydrated even after a long night out, or when I'm super tired or lit."

"This mask that I'm holding is my friend's new crystal-infused skin care line. I definitely recommend it! @klastbeauty #crystalclaymask #crystals.”
